I Must Confess: My Fears & Phobias

Linking up with Kirsty from My Home Truths today for I Must Confess. Today's topic: My Fears and Phobias.

Truthfully we could be here for a while. I have so many phobias and fears. Deep breathe. Here goes.

BLOOD

I am squeamish. Watching RPA or any of those medical type shows where they show surgery is my idea of hell.  I actually had to be cut open when I had Mr4, while awake, but numb from the waist down. I have NO IDEA how I survived the mere thought of it. Or the two previous natural births I went through as well. Basically it was only down to the fact that I simply had no choice at that point.

COCKROACHES

I despise them. And, tragically. fear them. I'm usually so quiet and placid, but any sighting of these vile creatures will have me omitting the most blood-curdling, piercing scream. A scream that would wake the dead. Micky Blue Eyes has often commented that I could be hired for horror movies with that afore mentioned scream.

DENTISTS

The smell. The chair. You sit down. It slowly whirs backwards. The blood rushes to your head. You are TRAPPED. There is no escape from all those sharp metal objects probing inside your mouth. Meanwhile, you are expected to keep your jaw gaping, cavernously open, therefore making any possibility of taking deep, slow, calming breaths, absolutely impossible. Then, as you start to hyperventilate, that ominous hissing noise of the air hose assaults your senses..EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKK!!!

FLUORESCENT LIGHTS

And anything involving bright shinyness, which I now realise is connected to sensory issues with having Aspergers. This doesn't make it any less scary though.  In particular, when entering Target, I break into a cold sweat. Fluorescent lights bouncing off the white, shiny floors. Their theme song warbling away about being happy is seriously not the case for me. I am not happy at all. Naturally, being a bonafide bogan, Target is as upmarket as I get when shopping, so I am forced to go in there on a regular basis. Hold me.

HEIGHTS

As a girl I was always terrified of stepping onto the escalator at the shops. This fear still hasn't quite left me. It's a heights thing. The further up I am, the more I fear it. Just as well a trip up to the top off the Eiffel Tower is never likely to be on this bogan's horizon.  Ditto, a Harbour Bridge climb is never going to be on my bucket list. It's pretty high up on my fuck it list, as the joke goes, however.

NEEDLES

There was a time when we were having fertility treatments which involved me being jabbed on a daily basis, so you'd think I'd have completely discarded this nasty little phobia. Wrong. The thought of having to have a routine blood test (eeek, two of my phobias at once - blood and needles) has me hiding in a corner in a foetal position.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Or, you know, any speaking really. I am not a woman of many words.  (Well, except perhaps on this blog, where I seem to have no problem with boring the pants off anyone who doesn't click away. You're welcome.) My aversion to the old verbal diarrhoea becomes even more pronounced when it involves a large group.  Luckily, I have managed to organise my life so that the odds of this happening are largely nil. To do this I simply have no career and minimal human contact. Seems to work.

WATER

As in, putting my whole face underneath it. And no, I can't swim, thanks for asking.  This is why I'm also not fond of boats as they usually are on top of said water.

I'm sure I could think of more fears where these came from, but I'm too jittery presently. I keep having this recurring vision of being in a dentists chair, on a cliff top with water gushing below and cockroaches crawling on me while the dentist tries to give me a needle and...holy shit...I just wrote a horror story! *faints*

What are your fears and phobias? Have you ever managed to overcome any?

  1. I'm not a fan of blood or needles either and I HATE getting my face wet (although I can swim - I just choose not to !!).
Public speaking is a no-no for me and I don't like talking on the phone either !!
Thanks for stopping by my blog today - have a great week !

  2. You've got some common ones there - I won't be climbing the Harbour Bridge anytime soon either! I'm not a good swimmer, so I'm also not that fond of water craft. Love your description of the dentist's chair - think a few people might feel that way :)

    1. Yes my phobias are fairly common, but the intensity of them is very off the scale.

Yes, lots of people fear the dentists, but amazingly a lot of them stay in business lol

  3. We have a few of the same fears too. I definitely won't be conquering any of them soon...they can all stay over there..away from me.

  9. Cockroaches disgust me to the core of my being. I cannot even think about them without feeling ill. And heights completely incapacitate me. Aside from that, am slightly phobic about fish. I can look at them from a distance, but up close they freak me out and I sometimes have nightmares about them. Nothing wrong with me :D

Being brave is not about being unafraid. It's about being afraid and doing it anyway. You sound very brave indeed.

    1. I haven't been brave enough to go to the dentist, despite having a gaping hole in one tooth for months now....

Yeah, enough said about those evil crawling things.

Fish? Never heard that before, no aquariums or trips to Sea World for you then, I presume.

    2. Oh, love … take some very nice Valium then go to the dentist please? I won't tell you about the things that happen if you leave the gaping hole alone, but the hole fixing alone is not too bad at all. My little 5-yo muffin has had her fair share of dental grief. This is going to sound a bit dumb, but could you go to a paeds dentist? They are SO sweet, gentle and caring. If you can't get the valium, that is!
I'm a bit strange - I can watch RPA while I eat my dinner, no probs. Fascinating stuff. Public speaking though? Over my dead body. Which would be difficult.

Oooooooh - see if you can get hypnotised for some of these things - that might help you face some of them.

    3. Yes, I hear you, I've heard from a friend what might happen if I don't go soon. Valium sounds like a good idea.

Sorry about your 5yo. My 8yo is having some grief too. I've taken him to a paeds dentist. Shockingly expensive, but very good, as you say. I'll do it. I know I have to. Sigh.

      Thanks for reading.

  10. Hi, your phobias are pretty common. As a nurse, I have had to deal with the needles, fluorescent lighting, public speaking and blood. My only real fear is: heights and I forgot about mice too. I am so scared of them.

    1. Oh no, you're saying I'm common? And here I was thinking I was a..erm, bogan. Right you are then.

Yes, mice are completely disgusting, as are all rodents. No idea why anyone would have them as pets. *shudders*

  12. Oh my god I have so many irrational fears and neuroses. Sharks, public toilets, wet grass. Gahhhh. I am pretty non squeamish when it comes to bodily fluids but get me in a public loo and, oh God the horror...

    1. Public toilets are certainly very revolting indeed. I've never heard of a wet grass phobia, before, though.

  13. Loved reading your list (and love that it's alphabetized!) and I'm in 100% agreement with you on the blood, cockroaches freak me out too, and dentists are far from my favorite person to visit... Though, I think my strangest phobia is the garbage disposal. While I like that it disposes, if I have to push something into it, I'm always afraid it's gonna turn on - so I use a wooden spoon. This phobia began after the electric mixer incident of 2007... But that's a story for another time! :)

    1. Okay I need to hear about this incident!! I've never actually had a garbage disposal, they do sound a bit scary.

  26. My phobias are dentists, snakes and tornadoes! Like you, I am not keen on putting my face under water either after having my head shoved into the water at swimming lessons by a masochistic swim teacher, when I was just 6.

    1. I think something similar happened to me too. I've never learned to swim as a result. Sigh.

  27. As a nurse I have to confess I don't love a lot of blood. I tend to avoid work in wards which involve a lot of wounds. Give me a nice failing heart or unstable diabetic any day ! I used to be terrified of public speaking, nauseated, head between the knees terrified, but I've had to challenge that a few times and have got better. I still want to vomit, but I can get through a speech without hurling on the stage . Yay !

    1. It's weird isn't it? I've always been afraid of heights, water and cockroaches but dentists is a more recent one. Sigh.

  31. I am not a big fan of blood or needles...I thought once that I might like to be a nurse though...go figure!
I too cringed and cried the first time I had to give myself those fertility needles, luckily I had a lovely friend who came over and gave me the big one each morning, was too hard to handle myself.
