Hello, people! Welcome to another Monday! That glorious and beloved day of the week. People love Mondays! The same way they love root canal. Do you know what I'm saying?
Anyway, once again I am joining in the fun for Life This Week over at Denyse Whelan Blogs. I missed it last week. Oops.
Let's talk about exams! Simply because that's the prompt. Otherwise I wouldn't really talk about them. If I did I'd have two words:
EXAMS SUCK!
I say this because I wasn't very good at them.
Case in point: it may be hard to believe it (if this blog is anything to go by), but English was one of my best subjects in high school. However, I failed English in my HSC!
My poor mother was so astonished and dumbfounded that she truly believed there must have been some kind of mistake. She insisted that we enquire into this grave injustice.
We wrote back to check. This was back in in 1988, the time of the old snail mail. Subsequently, I received confirmation of my abysmal results. YAY!
EPIC FAIL.
Every now again I still have hideous dreams (nightmares) that I'm back at school or doing exams. It's always such a relief to wake up!
Whenever I'm in a situation of being tested or having to think quickly on the spot, I can't seem to process it. It was exactly the same for me with job interviews. I'm not sure if it's an ASD thing or just a Ness thing. Either way, clearly I'm special. So very SPECIAL.
I sometimes wonder if I'm doing the right thing as a parent, because I'm not pushy or demanding about exams or achievements. Sure, I want my boys to do their best, but I don't want them to be despondent if they don't or can't. The HSC and high school is not the be and end all of life! I don't think so, anyway. But then, I would, wouldn't I. Considering what I just revealed. Moving along...
Anyway, in my (admittedly limited) experience, no employer was ever the least bit interested in school or HSC results. I have no idea if this has changed these days. Has it?
So that's my thoughts about exams! Deep, huh? Yeah, not really. It's obvious why I never became an academic.
However, I feel like I should throw in an impromptu exam, just for shits and giggles. I should test YOU. But I know nothing. NOTHING!
Hang on, I know about The Carpenters!
May I present to you the most IMPORTANT test you will ever take.

If you answered with all C's, then congratulations!
You scored A PLUS!
As for the rest of you; take a good hard look at yourselves. What are you actually DOING with your lives?? Disgraceful!
This is the most IMPORTANT exam! The rest are rubbish.
You've been told.
Now off you go and educate yourself about all things Carpenters!
But before you go, just one tiny question...
What exactly DO 'normal' people think about and remember? Ahem.

Do you think exams are important? You know, proper ones...?

The only one I didn't know was the one re the Christmas album. As a former anorexic KC intrigued me. Plus I've seen a TV movie based on their lives a couple of times. (Or perhaps two different ones....)
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the The Karen Carpenter Story. A somewhat sugar coated version of her life. If you're really intrigued Randy Schmidt's book "Little Girl Blue: The Life Of Karen Carpenter" is a good read. Or wait for the movie version - which I believe is going to happen eventually!
DeleteAfter all this time I think having a skill that's useful to employers - like say computer programming - is much more important than exams. Meanwhile I have screwed up many a job interview and will probably continue to screw them up into the future.
ReplyDeleteYes! Useful skills are the thing. Ugh. Good luck with those interviews xo
DeleteFor a minute there I thought you were quizing me on the 'nail and hammer' variety of carpenters and felt a twang of nerves that took me right back to the HSC (some twenty something years ago). I can't say that I felt any better when I realised you were talking about the singing variety! Agggh! I know nothing about them either! Epic FAIL on both counts.
ReplyDeleteI do absolutely agree that there is far too much emphasis on formal exams but I guess there is some merit in young people having to learn how to cope in high pressure situations. Me? I'd just prefer to forget about them altogether. :-)
Ha ha, I probably should have explained about my fascination to the uninitiated!
DeleteYou have a point. I have never learned to cope in high pressure situations!
I answered all C's I am a brilliant person thanks to your Carpenters' Quiz. I sang a Carpenters song at an audition for a musical where my husband was producer but I missed the part. I MISSED THE PART....and didn't speak to HIM of course. Admittedly, we were in our 20s in a country town and I "wasn't" star material as others were and then he wanted me to take the role of an old woman and I declined (not graciously at all) Love your post..but don't love your lack of confidence in yourself and your abilities. Thanks for linking up. Denyse. #lifethisweek
ReplyDeleteNO! You totally should have gotten that part. Although Carpenters songs are surprisingly difficult to sing...
DeleteI do need a kick up the bum for all my self-deprecation at times... Thanks Denyse xo
LOL I worked out it was all C's before I was halfway through ... I must confess hubster put some Carpenters on the other night, and they sang way more songs than I realised!!! So I was a Carpenters fan without even knowing it!!!
ReplyDeleteYour husband is a very sensible man. A) he married you, and B) he likes The Carpenters! And so do you! YAY.
DeleteGreat exam! I actually surprised myself with how many I got right!!! Woo hoo! :)
ReplyDeleteYou get a smiley stamp! :-)
DeleteI have the same ASD! My mind goes absolutely blank and refuses to think of anything.
ReplyDeleteIt's awful, right?! Glad I'm not the only one xo
DeleteThat was the funnest exam I've ever taken! Especially with your hilarious asterisk footnotes. The Christmas one tripped me up and Madonna, I have been schooled all things Carpenter :)
ReplyDeleteI had massive anxiety with exams...hated them! Have thrown up before exams and blanked out at some. So glad I no longer have to do them!
ReplyDeleteI failed your test, but I did get 100% in "Who said it? Trump vs Kanye". I know a number of highly intelligent people at selective schools who failed the HSC yet went on to excel in their fields (basically it came down to (a) not being happy at the school or (b) doing it to spite their mother who they weren't getting along with - but adore now. Kids are kids and the HSC is at a difficult time of life for them. School is school but there are ways around to everything. Doors close but then open again, because that's what doors do...
